April 2026 HR News & Insights

Wellness, Mindfulness and Moving with Intention
April invites a sense of renewal. Longer days and brighter mornings serve as a reminder that growth does not need to be dramatic to be meaningful.
When we think about workplace wellness, we often focus on benefits programs, step challenges or health initiatives. While these can be valuable, true wellness begins with deliberate habits that support both mental focus and physical movement.
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in what we are doing. It is noticing how we feel throughout the workday. It is recognizing when our energy shifts. It is pausing before reacting and choosing intention over autopilot.
Physical wellness follows the same principle. Movement does not require a gym membership or a major lifestyle change. It requires consistency. Small, steady actions can make a meaningful difference:
- Taking a five-minute walk between meetings
- Standing during a phone call
- Stretching at your desk
- Parking slightly farther away
These small moments of movement can improve focus, support mood and build resilience. They also reinforce an important message: well-being matters.
For employers, wellness and mindfulness are more than individual initiatives. They reflect organizational culture. When leaders model healthy boundaries, encourage breaks and support sustainable workloads, they create an environment where employees can perform at their best.
This month, consider one simple question:
What is one small action I can take each day to support my well-being?
Not a complete transformation. Just one consistent step.

Easy Monthly Touchpoints
- A question to spark dialogue: What helps you reset during a busy day?
- “Wellness Wins” board: Invite employees to share small habits they are building, such as drinking more water or taking lunch away from their desk.
- National Walking Day: Encourage employees to take one outdoor photo and post it internally.
Wellness grows the same way spring does. Gradually. Quietly. Intentionally. And over time, those small steps create lasting strength.
Compliance Update
Best Practices for Accommodating Mental Health Conditions in the Workplace
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers with 15 or more employees to reasonably accommodate an applicant’s or employee’s disability, including mental health conditions that satisfy certain criteria. The ADA is enforced by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Failure to comply with the ADA’s accommodation requirements can have substantial consequences for employers.
Legal Update
DOL General Counsel Shifts Enforcement Efforts to Nonunion Workplaces
The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) General Counsel (GC) Jonathan Berry issued an internal memorandum instructing agency attorneys to prioritize enforcement of federal labor and employment laws in nonunion workplaces.
The GC internal memorandum provides an early indication of how the DOL intends to prioritize enforcement actions. Nonunion employers may see an increase in DOL enforcement actions as the agency shifts focus from unionized to nonunion workplaces. Employers should take steps now to ensure they comply with federal labor and employment law.
